Breaking Down the Ratios

If you’ve been vaping for some time, you probably have a general understanding of ratios and how they affect several aspects of your vaping experience.  Still, many vapers aren’t quite sure how these ratios differ in terms of the ways in which they alter one’s cloud production, throat hit, flavor and more. 

By understanding how these different ratios affect the way in which you experience your vaping sessions, you’ll be able to zero in on your sweet spot more efficiently than ever before.  That’s why we’re here to break down the different ratios that are available today, and the pros and cons of each when it comes to the aspects of your e-liquids.  By following this guide, you’ll know exactly which ratio is right for you when the time comes to restock your vape juice supply.

What are VG and PG?

First, let’s explain what VG and PG are, as understanding the qualities of each ingredient will help you grasp why that ratio is so important.  VG stands for vegetable glycerin, and PG stands for propylene glycol.  All e-liquids contain these two ingredients as well as nicotine and flavoring.  VG and PG make up what’s considered the base of any vape juice, which means that these ingredients are far more abundant in the formula of your e-liquid than the other two.

VG (Vegetable Glycerin)

Vegetable glycerin is a thick, viscous and relatively sticky ingredient that is commonly found in cosmetics, cleaning products and food items.  It has a naturally sweet taste, and it’s completely odorless.

When it comes to e-liquids, vegetable glycerin thickens up your vape juice so that the coil doesn’t burn through it or overheat it.  Vegetable glycerin is associated with stronger cloud production because thicker vape juice means thicker vapor. 

PG (Propylene Glycol)

Propylene glycol is an alcohol-derived ingredient that’s far thinner than vegetable glycerin.  Like vegetable glycerin, it’s found in many cosmetics, food items and cleaning products.  It balances out the vegetable glycerin content by thinning out the e-liquid.  If the e-liquid were too thick, the coil would not be able to turn it into vapor.

Propylene glycol is known to lend itself to a stronger flavor as well as a stronger throat hit.  That’s because its thinner consistency has a tremendous impact on the way in which the coil heats the vape juice.

What is a Ratio and Why is it So Important?

Like we said, every e-liquid has a base of VG and PG.  Now, as demonstrated above, each ingredient affects the way in which your vape juice is heated and turned into vapor.  So, the balance of ingredients determines many aspects of your vapes.  Figuring out the ratio that works for you will help you get the cloud production, throat hit and flavor that you want.

Max VG

Max VG, as the name implies, is a base that contains almost 100 percent vegetable glycerin and an extremely low amount of propylene glycol.  The exact amounts of each ingredient differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Max VG e-liquids are popular among cloud-chasers who use high-wattage systems.  In order to enjoy the unique benefits of a max VG vape juice, the vaping device must be set at an extremely high output level.  If the output level is too low, the coil will struggle to turn the liquid into vapor.

When you vape a max VG e-liquid, you’re vaping a vape juice that’s extremely thick.  This means that the clouds that you produce will be very dense and large.  However, the more VG, the less of a throat hit you’re going to get, and your flavor probably won’t be as strong. 

Max PG

Max PG e-liquids are for very low-wattage devices as the consistency of the vape juice is very thin.  With a max PG vape juice, you’ll get a very strong throat hit and not a whole lot of cloud production.  One issue that many max PG users run into is that the coil gets flooded and the tank leads due to how watery the consistency of this formula is.


80/20 e-liquids are popular among sub-ohm enthusiasts who enjoy vaping at high output levels.  This ratio allows for big, fluffy clouds with enough PG to create a very subtle hit to the throat.


70/30 bases are still popular among sub-ohm fans who user high-wattage devices.  This base will still give you a nice amount of cloud production, but you’ll also enjoy a decent hit to the throat on the inhale.


A 60/40 base is best for vaping systems that operate at medium output levels.  That’s because this base is almost completely balanced, and so anything set too low would struggle to produce vapor, and anything set too high would burn through the vape juice because of the thinness of its consistency.  A 60/40 base is popular among vapers who don’t need to produce huge clouds but still want to take in a nice amount of vapor.  This base will also give you a good throat hit on the inhale thanks to the PG content.


A 50/50 ratio is ideal for low-wattage systems because high output levels could burn through the e-liquid due to the high PG content.  This base gives vapers the best of both worlds: a satisfying amount of vapor and a nice, strong throat hit.  Additionally, the flavor will likely be pretty pronounced. 

It’s worth noting that the large majority of salt nic e-juices have this balanced ratio because the pod mods that are compatible with this type of juice are low-wattage devices.

Which Ratio is Right for You?  It’s Your Call

Which e-liquid ratio you choose has an enormous impact on everything from the way in which you experience the flavor of your liquid to the thickness of the clouds that you blow out of your mouth.  Following this guide will help you make a more informed decision when you purchase your next batch of juice.  Whether you choose max VG, max PG or something in between is ultimately up to you.
